Banana Cream MoonPie Pie

Perhaps you are not aware that there is a MoonPie over Mobile event on New Year's Eve here in Alabama?    Well, there totally is!  A big MoonPie thing descends from a building in downtown Mobile during the count down to midnight. We watch it on TV.  It's hilarious.

This year I decided to create a special New Year's Eve treat for the occasion, and so the Banana Cream MoonPie Pie was born!

Well, it doesn't have a crust so it probably isn't technically a pie.  But it does have cream pie filling!

To make a Banana Cream MoonPie Pie you need:

1 (3.4 oz) box of instant banana cream pudding & pie filling (not the kind that requires cooking on the stove, the instant kind that you mix with cold milk)
2 cups of cold milk
6 oz plain non-fat Greek yogurt
4 MoonPies
a pie plate, a medium sized bowl, a whisk, and a sharp knife.

First, empty the instant banana cream pudding mix into the bowl.  Slowly whisk in the milk.

Next, add the yogurt a little at a time, whisking it briskly until it is completely mixed in and smooth.  Set the pudding mix aside to thicken for 5 minutes.

While the pudding is thickening, unwrap your MoonPies and cut each one into six wedges.

When your pudding is ready, pour half of it into the pie plate.  Arrange half of the MoonPie wedges throughout the mixture.

Top with the remaining pudding, then arrange the rest of the MoonPie pieces on top.  Cover and chill at least 2 hours before serving (the pudding/pie filing mixture will continue to set as it chills).

Happy New Years!

Cute Printable New Year's Banner : )

I just had to share this cute printable New Year's banner!  I found it while browsing around for simple New Year's Eve decorations - you can print it for free from this website.

Simply print out the banner, cut out each square, use a hole punch to put a hole in the upper corners of each square, and string the whole thing on a long piece of yarn.  So simple!

Knitting Mitred Squares

I'm experimenting with knitting some mitred squares (or mitered squares... I've seen a lot of both spellings).  I started with one pattern I found online but it involved a lot of counting stitches, which is quite annoying, and the end result was really just decreasing two stitches at the center point.  So I'm basically doing something similar with a stitch marker to save me from all that counting, plus an easier decrease.

I love how the squares look using stripey sock yarn!

Treat Yo Self

Happy solstice!  Thank goodness for the return of sunlight!

Today was chilly and sunny - the perfect day for a bike ride.   I decided to ride over to the health food/organic store.  There is only one that I know of in Tuscaloosa and it's several miles away, so I don't get to bike over there too often.  When I do I go into full "Treat Yo Yourself" mode and get whatever I want : )

Today I loaded up on geranium scented Mrs. Meyer's all purpose cleaner, Alabama honey, rosemary & lime lip balm, Yerba Mate, loose leaf green teas from the bulk bins, various incense scents, and a bottle of argo brewed tea.  It was great!

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Big Dream Zine

Yesterday I finished up a new zine and made a bunch of copies : )  This zine is called "The Big Dream" and it was inspired by my own experiences having dreams and trying to make them come true.  I love hearing about people's goals and aspirations, listening to stories of how people made their dreams into a reality, hearing about failures and false starts.  I thought it would be nice to make a little piece of positivity for fellow dreamers - something to encourage you along your way.

This zine has 10 pages with drawings, a few quotes, and a few little nuggets of advice from me : )

I'm also offering a new 3 pack of my full sized zines - The Big Dream, Creative Energy Vol.1, and Creative Energy Vol.2.

Yay ZIIIIINES!!!!

thrift scores

I've been acquiring more houseplants over the last couple of weeks, so I went to the thrift store to look for some potting solutions.  I like to reuse pretty old ceramics for plants, so I was thrilled to find this pretty pitcher for $1.75!

I also found a basic white pot to hold one of my new baby spider plants...

I picked up a few frames to use in new fiber art pieces...

And this lovely pastel wall hanging will be showing up in a mixed media piece, too...

DIY Tassel Garland

Yesterday I made this easy tassel garland to hang in the window outside my apartment's back door.  Living in a 100 year old building with a very stark hallway means that some visitor's first impressions are "creepy" and "haunted"  : )  Of course, when you enter one of the units everything is nice and cozy, it's just that darned hall.  This week I had some free time so I took it upon myself to add a few welcoming accessories (colorful door mats, door decorations on my front and back doors, a peppermint oil diffuser for a fresh scent, and now this garland).  Much nicer!

The tassel garland is fun to make and is a great way to use up little balls of leftover yarn. First, make a little bundle of yarn pieces (for these tassels I cut 12 pieces of yarn that were each about 6.5 inches/16 cm long).

Next, tie a longer piece of yarn in a knot around the center of the bundle.

Then, fold the bundle in half around the knot.  Tie a second length of yarn about a 1/2 inch from the top and knot it off, trimming the ends short.

Use that first length of yarn to make a small loop at the top of your tassel for hanging.  Trim it as needed.

Repeat those steps to make as many tassels as you need.  I simply strung them onto another long piece of yarn to hang in the window.  I can already think of many more places I'd like to hang these!

twinkle twinkle

As the solstice gets closer and closer I like to add white lights and extra candles to the house.  This weekend we added both, as well as a few sparkly things to reflect the light at night. Everything feels so cozy : )

P.S. - Have you seen this house tour on Apartment Therapy?  I love it!  Even the garden is perfect.

Crochet Pattern :: Snow Day Scarf

I just finished my newest crochet pattern!  The Snow Day Scarf is cozy, scrumptious, and simply beautiful.  It is crocheted with Araucania Azapa yarn (alpaca, merino, and a touch of silk) using a stitch that looks much more complicated than it really is.  Once you crochet a few rows you'll have the pattern memorized, trust me!

The stitch pattern is perfectly suited to this yarn, it really makes the most of its gorgeous texture.  *Sigh* so beautiful.

You can find all the pattern details and more photos here in my shop!

{a little luxury}

I chose a few new skeins of yarn yesterday.  Luxurious skeins, if I do say so myself.  I'm working on a crochet cowl with this bit of Auracania Azapa - the stitch shows off the yarn's texture perfectly!
